Is on a ship sailing across the Atlantic from Oxford, England to South Carolina. The Mini dealer tells me that this journey takes a month. The distance is about 2500 nautical miles. Freighters travel about 200 miles per day. So, by my math, the voyage should take no more than 2 weeks. The concept of a "slow boat" takes on new meaning. So, I get to continue to drive the SUV getting 15 mpg for another 3 or 4 weeks. In the meantime, Oregon's genius Legislature adopted a ruling mandating E10 fuel across Oregon beginning January 15, 2008, about a week after I ordered the Mini. E10 fuel, for those of you unaware, if fuel doctored with 10% Ethanol. This is great for the ethanol producers, but terrible for auto drivers and the environment. Cars get about 10% lower gas mileage and put out more pollutants under E10 fuel. But the Oregon Legislature didn't bother to think about this. And cars produced for Oregon don't run exactly well on E10 fuel. So, now I've got a new gas sipper on its way soon and the Oregon Legislature has pulled the rug out from all my fuel savings. I'll still get excellent gas mileage, but about 10% less than I had anticipated. Sucks big time.
